The environment: man and nature
The geographical context
As you come north from the Great Plain of Lombardy, the first chain of mountains you meet is the “Orobie”, in the provinces of Bergamo, Brescia, Lecco and Sondrio. They are known as the “Pre-Alps”.
The Northern slopes of these mountains are in Valtellina. They are steep slopes, divided by deep parallel valleys, going down to the valley formed by the course of the River Adda.
The Valtellina Orobie Mountains Park is on the side of the mountains which lies in the province of Sondrio, covering a territory mainly above 1,000 metres (3,000 feet), bounded to the west by the watershed of Monte Legnone and to the east by the Aprica Pass.
